    Lontra Provocax

These otters have suffered greatly from hunting in the past, and although it is now illegal there is still plenty of poaching. The biggest threat these days is habitat destruction, and the accelerating growth of fish farming in their coastal range will probably bring them into further conflict with man. There has been an estimate that half the freshwater population may disappear in the next few years from habitat loss, and a similar proportion of the coastal population from fish farming.
